I may be just a little bit hung over. It is fair to say I drank just a smidge too much last night, and it is affecting me this morning somewhat.
Our plans did not include this, our plan this week was clear and set, no drinking until Friday. Focus on being healthy, getting up early, running, yoga, long walks and generally being well behaved and holier than thou. Then we’d let loose on Friday night, but not so much so that we’d miss the morning, the best part of the day.
We were heading out for an early dinner, to a restaurant we’d had recommended to us. Before we set our sights on the identified venue, we detoured past a place we wanted to book for a meal on Friday night. Walking over there Glen mentioned what a great afternoon it was for a beer.
As we wandered past a bar we’ve been too a few times, a knowing look past between us. “I mean we are on holidays” I said, “and it is anything can happen Wednesday” replied Glen. It was agreed, one beer then straight to dinner, it wasn’t said, but we knew we’d have one or two with dinner, but that would be it. Sensible, but still fun and spontaneous.
The first beer was really good. So maybe one more couldn’t hurt. We finished the second and headed to dinner. The food was pretty spicy, so of course we were forced to drink a little more. I mean water doesn’t cool your mouth like beer does. They only had the big bottles, so three big beers later (between the two of us, I’m not insane) we wandered towards the songthaew (tuk tuk bus). We hadn’t been in this area in the evening before, and the usually shuttered restaurants and bars had come alive in the dark. It was really nice to see so many people out, laughing as they spilled out of restaurants and bars. We stumbled past a bar we’d not noticed previously, playing great music, and buzzing, full of young Thai’s having a night out. “This place looks good, pretty busy for a Wednesday night, we should remember it and come back”, “or we could have just one more”, my rubber arm twisting husband replied. Another knowing look and before we knew it we were sitting at a little table, cold beer in hand.
Just one and we’ll go home. We sat and watched the crowd, enjoying the atmosphere. Then a band started to set up, the bar filled even more, and big bottles of Thai whisky, mixers and buckets of ice started appearing on every table. Of course we couldn’t leave now, we had to see the band start up at least. Another beer then?
The music started, they were great. The crowd loved it and every table in the place was full. The staff wandered past filling glasses, adding ice. There seemed to be a one for you, one for me policy with the waiters having a drink at every table. How they weren’t pissed I don’t know. We watched the band signal, please no more free drinks from the crowd, they clearly knew their limits.
We spotted the Singha, Chang and Leo girls, each one dressed in their distinctive dresses, promoting their brands, gold, green and red, wandering through the room brining more drinks to already full tables.
At some point we called it, time to head home. Back in our apartment we collapsed on the couch, chatting happily about the night, the band, the people watching. Mysteriously a gin and tonic appeared in my hand. By midnight I was done, drunk tired, I stumbled to bed, setting my alarm for my 7am run, always the optimist. Needless to say, when the alarm went off, it was quickly quietened.
Now its after lunch time, I’m drinking my “morning coffee” and feeling a little worse for wear. Anything can happen Wednesday was fun. This headache can easily be cured with a little Panadol and a swim, I’m sure. I have no regrets.
